Hey there, and thanks for stopping by. If you’re reading this, you likely care about our military community as much as we do here at Operation T.A.G. Today, we’re talking about something that’s been brewing under the surface for years, literally. It’s fuzzy, it’s toxic, and it’s making our kids sick.
Just a couple weeks ago, on February 10, 2026, the halls of Capitol Hill weren’t just filled with the usual political back-and-forth. They were filled with the voices of military spouses who have had enough. These families aren't asking for luxury; they are asking for air that doesn't poison their children. They were there to testify about the devastating health impacts of toxic mold in privatized military housing, pushing for the passage of the MOLD Act (S. 3654).
At Operation T.A.G., our mission is about "Tangible Acts of Gratitude." But right now, it feels like the gratitude being shown to our service members is coming in the form of black mold and bureaucratic excuses. Let’s dive into why this fight matters and how we can actually fix it.
The Testimony That Shook the Room
Erica Thompson, a military spouse from Maxwell Air Force Base, stood before lawmakers and shared a story that should keep every American up at night. After moving into privatized military housing in 2023, her family’s life was upended. We aren’t talking about a little cough or a sneeze. We are talking about severe health crises.
Thompson’s five children were diagnosed with a list of conditions that sound like they belong in a medical textbook, not a childhood: brain inflammation, chronic asthma, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), and even pediatric cataracts.
The most heartbreaking part? Because of these conditions, caused by the very homes the military provided, all five of her children are now medically disqualified from future military service. Think about that for a second. These children, raised in the culture of service, are now barred from following in their parents' footsteps because the Department of Defense’s housing partners couldn't be bothered to keep the humidity down.

700,000 Families in the Crosshairs
This isn't just one "unlucky" family. This is a systemic failure affecting approximately 700,000 military family members.
For years, the Military Housing Privatization Initiative (MHPI) was supposed to be the "fix" for aging base housing. Instead, it created a system where private companies get paid guaranteed BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) while families are left to fight for basic maintenance. Thompson’s family lost everything, thirteen years of homeschool curriculum, irreplaceable family drawings, and even their family Bible, all contaminated by mold. And the kicker? They received zero compensation for the property loss.
When we talk about "readiness" in our military, we usually talk about tanks, planes, and training. But readiness starts at home. If a service member is deployed and worrying about whether their toddler’s brain is literally swelling because of the vents in the living room, that service member is not focused on the mission.
What is the MOLD Act?
The Military Occupancy Living Defense (MOLD) Act (S. 3654) is the legislative hammer we need to crack down on this negligence. Sponsored by a bipartisan group including Senators Richard Blumenthal and Tim Sheehy, along with Representatives Jimmy Panetta and Gus Bilirakis, this bill aims to do what previous "Tenant Bills of Rights" failed to do: create real accountability.
Here is what the MOLD Act actually does:
- Enforceable Standards: It sets strict standards for humidity levels and mold remediation.
- Independent Inspections: No more "we checked ourselves and found nothing" from the housing companies. It mandates third-party inspections.
- 24/7 Hotline: A dedicated line for families to report issues without fear of retaliation.
- Financial Penalties: If the companies don't fix the issues, their executive bonuses get withheld and housing allowances get refunded to the families.
It’s about time we stop treating military housing companies like untouchable entities and start treating them like the contractors they are.

Take Action: Who to Call Right Now
We need this bill passed. Not next year, not after another "study," but now. We need you to pick up the phone. It takes two minutes, and it makes a massive difference when these offices hear from real people.
Please contact your local Senator and Representative, but specifically, reach out to the sponsors to show your support for their leadership on this:
- Sen. Richard Blumenthal: (202) 224-2823
- Sen. Tim Sheehy: (202) 224-2644
- Rep. Jimmy Panetta: (202) 225-2861
- Rep. Gus Bilirakis: (202) 225-5755
Tell them you support the MOLD Act (S. 3654) and that military families deserve better than "brain inflammation and broken promises."
The "Red, White & Secure" Exit Strategy
While we fight the legislative battle on the Hill, we also need to talk about a practical escape route for families. Living on base shouldn't feel like a trap. The best way to ensure your family is safe is to own the roof over your head. When you own the home, you control the maintenance, the humidity, and the health of your environment.
This is exactly why Operation T.A.G. exists and why we champion the Hometown Hero Credit.
We are a non-profit organization dedicated to helping military families transition from the uncertainty of base housing into the security of homeownership. Through our program, we provide a 2% credit up to $21,000 to help you buy or refinance a home.

How the Hometown Hero Credit Works
I want to be very clear about how this works because we aren't here to play games with your finances.
- The 2% Rule: The credit is calculated based on your loan amount, not the sales price.
- Up to $21,000: That is a significant chunk of change that can change the math on your home purchase.
- What it covers: You can use this credit to pay your closing fees, buy down your interest rate (making your monthly payment much lower), or pay real estate agent fees. In some cases, it can even be used to pay down existing debt to help you qualify for a VA loan.
- What it doesn't cover: It cannot be used for a down payment. However, since VA loans generally require $0 down payment, this isn't usually an issue for our military families!
Imagine taking that $21,000 and using it to buy down your interest rate so that your monthly mortgage is actually less than the BAH you’re currently handing over to a privatized housing company for a moldy duplex. That is the definition of "Red, White & Secure."
Owning Your Health
When you own your home, you aren't at the mercy of a landlord who ignores your emails. You are the boss. If you want a top-tier HVAC system with dehumidification to protect your kids from asthma, you can install it. If you want to ensure your attic is sealed and mold-free, you make the call.
We want to get our families out of these toxic environments and into homes where they can build equity instead of hospital bills.
Final Thoughts
The testimony on February 10th was a wake-up call. We cannot continue to let the "future force": our children: be disqualified from service before they even reach adulthood because of the negligence of housing contractors.
Pass the MOLD Act. Call your representatives. And if you’re ready to take control of your family’s living situation, reach out to us at Operation T.A.G. and let’s see if the Hometown Hero Credit can help you get into a home of your own.
You’ve served us. Now, let us serve you.
Stay safe, stay healthy, and let’s get to work.
