I’ve spent countless hours with my nose buried in leadership books over the years. Stack after stack, page after page, searching for that golden nugget of wisdom that would transform my understanding of what it means to lead. What struck me most wasn’t any single revolutionary concept, but rather how they all seemed to circle back to one fundamental truth: leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less.

This realization hit me like a lightning bolt during a quiet evening in my study. I was surrounded by dozens of leadership books, Maxwell, Sinek, Covey, each brilliant in their own right, yet all saying essentially the same thing in different wrapping paper. That’s when it dawned on me: if leadership is truly about influence, then every single person walking this earth is a leader. Even the most introverted, soft-spoken individual among us wields incredible power to shape the lives of others.

The Quiet Power We All Possess

Think about it for a moment. That reserved person in your office who rarely speaks up in meetings? They might influence their 10,000 people throughout their lifetime without ever realizing it. The server who greets you with genuine warmth at your favorite coffee shop influences your mood for the entire day. The neighbor who always waves hello influences the atmosphere of your entire street.

We’re constantly shaping each other’s worlds, often in ways so subtle we don’t even notice. It might be as simple as recommending a restaurant to a friend or as profound as sharing a life lesson with someone going through a tough time. Every conversation, every gesture, every choice we make sends ripples outward into the world.

This understanding became the driving force behind my book, “Living Life by Design.” I realized that if everyone possesses this incredible power of influence, then everyone deserves to understand how to use it intentionally to create the life they’ve always dreamed of and leave a meaningful legacy.

The Ripple Effect in Action

My own life has been profoundly shaped by countless individuals, some whose names I remember clearly, others who remain anonymous angels who crossed my path at just the right moment. The dedication section of my book stretches longer than most people’s grocery lists, because I wanted to honor every person who left their mark on my journey, both positive and challenging.

You see, influence doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t require a corner office, a fancy title, or a college degree. It simply requires being human and being present in the lives of others. The single mother working two jobs influences her children’s understanding of perseverance. The teacher who stays after class to help a struggling student influences that child’s entire academic trajectory. The friend who listens without judgment influences someone’s willingness to open up and trust again.

In my work as National Director and Founder of the Hometown Hero Credit Program, I witness this ripple effect daily. When we help a military family secure their dream home with our 2% credit benefit, up to $21,000 toward their purchase or refinance, we’re not just processing paperwork. We’re influencing their children’s school district, their sense of stability, their connection to community. That influence ripples out to neighbors, teachers, local businesses, and countless others who will intersect with this family’s story.

Small Actions, Profound Impact

There’s an African proverb that has become one of my absolute favorites: “If you think you’re too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent the night with a mosquito.” I chuckle every time I think about it, but the truth it contains is anything but amusing, it’s revolutionary.

That tiny mosquito, weighing barely more than a feather, can keep an entire household awake through the night. One small creature with an outsized impact. Sound familiar? We often underestimate our own ability to make waves simply because we can’t see the full scope of our influence.

The barista who remembers your name influences your sense of belonging. The coworker who acknowledges your idea in a meeting influences your confidence to speak up next time. The stranger who holds the door open influences your faith in basic human kindness. These micro-moments of influence compound over time, creating the fabric of our shared human experience.

Intentional Influence in Everyday Moments

The question isn’t whether you’re influencing others, you absolutely are. The question is whether you’re doing it intentionally, with awareness of the power you wield. Are you choosing to be a positive force in the lives you touch, or are you letting chance determine your impact?

I’ve learned to pause before important conversations and ask myself: How might my words travel beyond this moment? Who else might be indirectly affected by how I show up right now? It’s not about perfection, heaven knows I’ve had my share of moments I’d love to do over. It’s about consciousness and intention.

When someone approaches me about their homebuying journey, feeling overwhelmed by the process, I remember that my response influences not just their immediate stress level but potentially their entire relationship with homeownership. If I can help them see that their military service has earned them special benefits and support, I’m influencing their sense of worth and belonging. That feeling travels with them into their new home, their new neighborhood, their new chapter.

The Multiplier Effect

What fascinates me most about influence is its multiplying nature. When you inspire someone to pursue their dreams, they don’t just achieve those dreams, they become living proof to others that dreams are achievable. When you show kindness to someone having a rough day, they’re more likely to extend that kindness to the next person they encounter.

This is why I’m so passionate about helping our military heroes and first responders understand the full value of their service. When we provide them with financial benefits that make homeownership more accessible, we’re not just changing their immediate circumstances. We’re influencing their children’s understanding of stability, their community’s appreciation for service members, and their own sense of pride in their sacrifice.

Every positive interaction, every encouraging word, every act of genuine care creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond what we can see or measure. It’s like dropping a pebble in a still pond, the circles keep expanding long after the initial splash.

Your Leadership Legacy Starts Today

So here’s the beautiful truth I want to leave you with: you don’t need to wait for a promotion, a title, or permission to start leading. You don’t need to write a book or start a company or move mountains. You just need to wake up tomorrow morning and make a conscious choice about how you want to influence the world around you.

Will you be the person who listens deeply when someone needs to be heard? Will you offer encouragement when someone is struggling with doubt? Will you share your knowledge when someone is learning? Will you extend grace when someone makes a mistake?

The beautiful thing about influence is that it’s renewable. Every day brings fresh opportunities to make a positive impact, to leave the people you encounter a little better than you found them.

As I reflect on my own journey, from those early days devouring leadership books to writing my own, from questioning my impact to embracing my influence, I’m reminded that we’re all connected in this magnificent web of mutual influence. Each of us has the power to strengthen that web through our choices, our words, and our presence.

Today, how will you choose to influence others? How will you make your corner of the world a little brighter, a little kinder, a little more hopeful?

Remember, if you think you’re too small to make a difference, you haven’t spent the night with a mosquito. But unlike our tiny buzzing friends, let’s use our influence to help people sleep better at night, not keep them awake.

No mosquitoes, please.
